Bernie has been really unique for an American politician. I remember clips of him going viral as far back as 2006 on Myspace. What stands out to me is that even conservatives appreciate his "consistency," and I think that's a commentary on the lack of genuine messengers in American politics.
MORENA and its success – it’s a movement, more than just a party – suggest that it’s quite possible for a very progressive party to be extremely successful. Its success also suggests that we have a long path ahead of us.
The problem here is that Bernie's consistency and authenticity has taken a really long time to develop. What do you think the best way of establishing similar bonafides would be? How long before Rashida Tlaib (if that's our best example of a younger Dem exhibiting Sanders-like characteristics) might see her own version of this effect?
I am reminded of the success of the MORENA party in Mexico. The founder and first president was of course Andrés Manuel Lopéz Obrador, AMLO. He’s nothing if not authentic. His successor in the presidency of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, is authentic.
So if emphasizing radicalism and cozying up to the establishment is bad politics, that suggests that an anti-establishment moderate is the most electable candidate. Coming soon to a ballot near you: Jared Golden for President.
In all seriousness, I'm not sure how useful this is. Bernie benefits a lot from never having actually been in power; it is what allows him to be anti-establishment. But the point of politics is to win and use power, and once you do that, you become the establishment. (Consider the anti-establishment candidacies of Jimmy Carter, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama, all of whom became the establishment once they won.) If tomorrow Bernie replaced Schumer as minority leader, his approval ratings would be underwater by Christmas.
Trump's voters, and many of his critics, do not see him as the establishment no matter how in power he is. It does matter what you *do* with power. Bernie would simply not do the heinous and horrific things that Carter, Clinton, Obama, and Schumer all did. It really is that easy.
Bernie favorable with a quarter of “somewhat conservative” voters is NUTS
Americans really do love a Maverick, huh? Too bad the wrong party learned that lesson
Incredible headline lol 🤌
Thanks to data for progress for this exclusive scoop
Biggest AOC subs̶t̶a̶c̶k̶tweet of all time at the end there
Oh, now I get it, thanks. 😊

I need to know what that 2006 viral myspace clip of Bernie was saying
It was the famous clip of him grilling Alan Greenspun back in 2003 - https://www.c-span.org/clip/house-committee/user-clip-bernie-sanders-blasts-alan-greenspan/4472822

>the only national figure in elected office today to have a positive favorability rating
That's been true for most of the last 10 years.

Can't wait for this to continue to be intentionally ignored by everyone with the power to do something about it!
